A total of 1,355 two wheelers were booked since December 27 when the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) decided to resume taking action against the traffic rule violators."Most of the offenders are two-wheeler riders. And the maximum number of accidents happening in the Valley are related to them," said Superintendent of Police Posh Raj Pokharel, spokesperson at the MTPD.
Asserting that the traffic police are fully committed to reducing road mishaps, Pokharel added that they are striving to bring the number of two wheelers carrying two pillion riders to zero.
Before the fuel crisis, hardly anyone used to be caught riding two wheelers with two pillion riders. At present, however, many are forced to violate the strict rule despite their own inconvenience.
"As the number of vehicles plying on the roads has increased steadily of late, we have started to ensure that everyone adheres to the traffic rules so as to reduce the chances of road mishaps," said SP Pokharel. "We have been a bit lenient on public buses. Apart from that, we have resumed taking action against every vehicle violating traffic rules," he added.
The Valley recorded 2,141 road accidents in the last four months since the blockade started, according to the data provided by the MTPD. At least 71 people lost their lives, 116 sustained critical injuries and 205 sustained minor injuries during the period.
