KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam said acts of vandalism took place during demonstrations staged by various groups expressing dissatisfaction over the demarcation of provinces.
Briefing the Legislature-Parliament on Monday Minister Gautam said as many as 31 demonstrations were organized protesting the delineation of provinces in the new constitution.

Gautam said the government had to use force in some places in order to maintain law and order.
He went on to say that police had to resort to use of force during the rally led by Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal Chairman Kamal Thapa after the party cadres breached the restricted zone in Kathmandu. Police had fired seven rounds of teargas shells to disperse the crowd after they started pelting stones at the police.
Similarly, in Nawalparasi, two vehicles were set on fire after being vandalized during the protest staged by Tharuwan/Tharuhat United Struggle Committee. Two police personnel sustained injuries during intervention in the picketing of Baijanath Chaudhary's house by Devraj Chaudhary-led group.
As many as 106 cadres affiliated to Baidya-led political parties have been released after arrest during strike, said Gautam.
"Police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells after the protestors pelted stones at the security personnel and threw away office boards," he said, adding, "During the clash six demonstrators and 21 police personnel were injured."

Likewise, in Surkhet, the government has already provided Rs 1 million to the family of those killed during demonstrations and treatment expenses to the injured, said Gautam.
"It is the government's duty to operate public services," Gautam said, adding, "The vandalism occurred during the protests staged against the amended demarcation of the provinces."
