KATHMANDU, Dec 19: President Donald Trump has temporarily suspended the Diversity Visa (DV) lottery program, which allows nationals from countries with low immigration rates to apply for permanent residence in the US.
The decision comes roughly a month after the Trump administration announced plans to revise the DV lottery process for the 2027 cycle. Detailed information about the proposed changes has not yet been released.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristie Noem said the suspension was ordered under President Trump’s directive, instructing the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to halt the program. Citing security concerns, Noem highlighted past cases in which individuals linked to shootings at Brown University and MIT Professor had been granted entry, emphasizing that violent individuals should not be allowed into the country.
While the administration announced plans to adjust the 2027 DV lottery process last month, officials have yet to clarify when or how these changes will be implemented.
