KATHMANDU, July 3: Ram Chandra Jha, a lawmaker of the CPN (UML), was briefly detained by police on Friday after a taxi driver handed him over to them.

Jha was allegedly in an inebriated state and accompanied by three cabin girls of Dabali Cabin Restaurant in Old Baneshwar from where he was sent in a taxi after he drank excessively.

"The taxi driver handed over Jha to us when he turned almost senseless after drinking excessive alcohol," police said.

"He pretended to be a trader until we recovered his identity card as a lawmaker," said a police official. "We drove him home on learning his identity."

It has not been disclosed yet why Jha, a former minister for local development, was accompanied by the three girls in the taxi.
