SPORTS BRIEFS: Rajendra Gyawali bereaved

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Former first vice-president of Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) and Sports Editor of Nagarik Daily, Rajendra Gyawali has been bereaved of his mother Radha Devi Upadhaya on Wednesday.



Upadhaya died at the age of 75 at Om Nursing Home. [break]



Upadhya had been suffering from lungs and liver problems for a long time.



She is survived by two sons. Issuing a press release, NSJF has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Gyawali´s mother.



Singh, Sthapit advance

KATHMANDU
: Ashok Singh of Nepal Police and Nirmal Sthapit from Centeral region entered the second round of the fifth National Soft Tennis Tournament in the men´s singles category on Wednesday. Both the players entered the second round from group A.



In the other matches played at Halchowk court, Kamla Bhandari and Dusyanta Thapa from group B, Manoj Subba and Santosh Khatri from group C and Sohan Dhaubadel and Bijay Khadka from group D advanced into the next round. Likewise, Dharma Rja Ghale, Subodh Adhikari, Ramesh Pandey and Dipendra Shrestha also entered the second round from group E and F respectively. The four-day event is being organized keeping in view of the upcoming 14th World Soft Tennis Championship scheduled to be held at South Korea.


Rana elected NBSA president
KATHMANDU: Ashit Shumsher Rana has been unanimously elected as the president of Nepal Baseball and Softball Association through the first Annual General Meeting on Wednesday. Along with the president, a 17-member executive committee was also elected unanimously. Achyut Khanal and Jeevan KC are the vice-presidents of the newly elected committee. Ashok Bhattachan is the general secretary while Deepak Neupane and Bishnu Prashad Neupane have been elected as secretary and treasurer respectively.



Bagmati College in semis
KATHMANDU: Bagmati Modern College has entered the semifinals of the first Running Cup Inter-college Boys´ Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. With 11 points from Shankar Lama, Bagmati defeated Forward Academy 38-23 in the match played at the U-2 College court. Despite losing the match, Forward has also advanced into the semifinals as the group B runner-up. Meanwhile, Reliance International Academy and U-2 also fixed their semifinal spots from group A. Reliance beat Texas College 42-26 with 15 points from Yojan Khatiwada while U-2 defeated VS Niketan 32-25.
