SPORTS BRIEFS: NSJF conducts AGM

KATHMANDU, Dec 22: Nepal Sports Journalist Forum (NSJF) conducted its eighth Annual General Meeting in the capital on Saturday. The general assembly approved the progress report presented by General Secretary Hemanta Kafle and the financial report by Treasurer Prakash Timilsina. The meeting also amended some clauses of its statute.



The general assembly has approved to reserve two quotas for women journalist in its executive body from the next elections scheduled to be held three months later. National Sports Council Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama and vice president of the Federation of Nepal Journalists Yasoda Timilsina, praised NSJF for its active role in the development of sports and sports journalism in Nepal. Maharjan wins open chess


KATHMANDU: Prem Krishna Maharjan of Himalayan Chess Club claimed the title of Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament in the capital on Saturday. Maharjan finished with six points in the seven-round event held under the Swiss League format and bagged a purse of Rs 15,000. Maharjan edged past Ganeshman Duwal in the sixth round and Rajendra Bajracharya in the seventh. Krishna Thapa finished runner-up with equal six points as that of Maharjan on the head-to-head basis as Thapa had lost to Maharjan in the third round. Thapa had defeated FIDE Master Sujendra Prasad Shrestha and Nabin Tandukar. Thapa received Rs 10,000. Rajan Puri finished third. Puri had shared points with Tandukar and edged past Bivek Lama. The four-day tournament was organized by Richmond International College.



Far-Western Region holds Police


DHANGADHI: Producing a stunning result, Far-western Region held departmental giant Nepal Police Club to a 0-0 draw on Saturday in the First Women´s League being held in Dhangadhi, Kailali. In another match, Nepal Army Club eased past Mid-western Region 4-2 with twin goals coming from Deepa Adhikari. Adhikari scored in the 59th and 71st minutes. Earlier, Kishna Khatri had led Army ahead in the 28th minute. But Mid-western replied a minute later through Sapana Gole. Mid-western took a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute through Laxmi Thapa. But Adhikari´s first goal leveled the score and Bhujanga Rai put Army Ahead in the 62nd minute before Army wrapped up the match through Adhikari. Armed Police Force will take on Eastern Region and Central Region will lock horns with Nepal Army Club on Sunday.



Triton qualifies for CPL


KATHMANDU: Triton International College has qualified for the International College Premier League T20 Cricket to be held in Bangalore, India from January 16 to 26. In the final of the qualifiers held on Saturday at the TU ground, Kirtipur, Triton thumped GoldenGate College by eight wickets. Invited to bat first, GoldenGate was bowled out for 80 runs in 16.3 overs. Rom Shrestha scored 30 runs and Sagar Pun 15 runs for GoldenGate. Triton´s Basanta Regmi claimed three wickets while Rupesh Srivastav and Nirat Basnet got two scalps each. Shakti Gauchan claimed one wicket. In reply, Triton achieved the target in 12.3 overs losing two wickets. Man-of-the-final Binod Bhandari hammered 51 runs in his 30 over innings that included seven boundaries and two sixes. Indra Kamal Manandhar (10) and Manjit Shrestha (8) were unbeaten. Amit Shrestha was out for 11 runs. Sanjam Regmi pocketed both the wickets for GoldenGate. Rajesh Pulami of Kantipur City College was declared the man-of-the-series and best batsman while Basanta Regmi of GoldenGate got the best bowler award. The event was organized by Indian Educational Service.



TAOGC beats RNGC in friendly


KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan Army Officers Golf Club (TAOGC) defeated Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) during a friendly match played on Saturday in Kathmandu. TAOGC emerged victorious in nine rounds and RNGC in six while three others were tied among the 18 matches played. Madhukar Yakthumba and Madan Rana of RNGC finished as the best pair in the event played under 3/4 handicap format. Chief of Army Staff Gaurav SJB Rana, TAOGC President Lt Gen Nepal Bhusan Chand, RNGC President Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha and RNGC Vice-president Rabindra Man Shrestha handed over the prizes to the winners.
