SPORTS BRIEFS: Host The Excelsior, NIMS win basketball titles

KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Host The Excelsior School and defending champions NIMS clinched junior and senior boys´ basketball titles on Saturday while Deep Jyoti took home the title of junior boy´s Five-A-Side football tournament under Second Excelsior Cup being held in the capital.

Under junior boys´ basketball final, host edged past Galaxy 31-14 with 14 points coming from Kumar Gurung who was declared the most valuable player. In senior basketball title clash, NIMS edged past RIBS 38-22. Arjun Thapa Magar contributed the highest 11 points for winning side. Samir Tamang of NIMS got the most valuable player award.[break]

In the final of football, Deep Jyoti toiled hard to beat Daffodil 1-0. Ajay Shrestha scored the lone goal. Agrim Bhandari of Daffodil was declared the best player.

Altogether 28 teams in basketball including 12 teams in junior and 16 teams in senior category had competed in the event. Similarly, 16 teams had vied in football.

Quarterfinal lineup completes in London Snooker

KATHMANDU
: The quarterfinal lineup of the First London Snooker Championship being held in Manbhawan, Lalitpur was completed on Sunday.

Raju Lama, Som Bahadur Tamang, Tashi Wangchuk and Deepak Thapa Magar advanced into the quarterfinal winning their respective matches.

Lama edged past Sanat Pratap Malla 5-2, Tamang toiled hard to beat Lopsang Lama 5-4, Wangchuk saw off Nirman Bogati 5-3 and Thapa Magar beat Rajan Gurung 5-4.

The quarterfinal matches will begin from Tuesday.
