SPORTS BRIEFS: The Excelsior lifts basketball titles

KATHMANDU, Dec 12: The Excelsior School on Monday lifted the titles of the Fourth Whitefield Inter School Boys´ Basketball Tournament in both the senior boys´ and junior boys´ categories.



In the final of senior category, The Excelsior beat Galaxy 54-49 as Tashi Gurung scored 16 points. Gurung was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. In the junior boys´ section. [break]The Excelsior registered 31-27 win over Neric in extra period. After the regular time ended at 27-27, the match was set for the extra time. Kumar Gurung scored 18 points for the winning team. Bibek Gurung was declared the MVP. Umesh Tamang and Ayush Dangol were adjudged outstanding player of the tournament.



Canvass into quarters


KATHMANDU: Canvas School advanced into the quarterfinal in the junior boys´ category of Second Deneb Inter School Basketball Tournament on Monday defeating Nobbs 17-8 with 10 points from Dukesh Magar. The quarterfinal fixture for the junior boys´ has been completed with the win of Canvas. Canvas will face Gyan Niketan, Innovative faces host Deneb B, Teresa meets Whitefield while Odyssey will lock horns with Kathmandu English School.



Nepal´s finishes second in women´s kabaddi


KATHMANDU: Nepali women´s kabaddi team finished second in the Kabaddi World Championship on Monday in Faridabad, India, as informed by Nepal Kabaddi Association. Nepal lost the final to India 48-28. In the men´s section, Nepal had to satisfy in the third position.



NASA thumps NCC


KATHMANDU: Robin Khatri of NASA scored 36 points to lead his team to a 85-65 win over the host NCC in the First Sachindra Memorial Open Men´s Basketball Tournament on Monday. In other matches, Premier College defeated Golden Gate 54-26. Likewise, Bhani Mandal routed Bajra Academy 48-17 as Ashish KC scored 22 points for the winning team. The tournament is organized in the memory of late Sachindra Shrestha, who was a co-pilot with Tara Airlines and lost his life in a crash on December 15 last year.



Jaykar Memorial Tennis from Saturday


KATHMANDU: The 10th edition of Jaykar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament will kick off from December 17 at the Satdobato Tennis Complex, Lalitpur. The tournament will be held under 9 to 16 years age categories. The participants will compete in both singles and doubles categories. The total cash prize of the tournament is Rs 250,000. The tournament will played in knockout format.



Mother Teresa wins PABSON Sports Meet


MORANG: Mother Teresa School won the PABSON Sports Meet on Monday earning total 54 points and winning nine gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Jupiter Boarding School finished in the second position with 47 points winning four gold, seven silver and three bronze medals. With 33 points, Bright Future Secondary School finished in the third position. Bright Future won four gold, one silver and five bronze medals.


Eastern Region to bid for Seventh National Games

TAPLEJUNG: Eastern Region Sports Development Committee Chairman Kiran Rai said that the region would bid for hosting the Seventh National Games. Rai said that it is their turn to host the National Games as the Far Western is organizing the Sixth National Games.



Rai was speaking in Taplejung on Monday during the opening ceremony of district-level selection tournament for the Sixth National Games to be held in Dhangadi and Mahendranagar from February 26 to March 4.



Star Club remains on top

KATHMANDU: Star Club pulled a 1-0 win over Gyan Bhairab Club on Monday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League and remained unmoved on the top position. Nirmal Dura scored the lone goal in the 74th minute of the match, played at the Nepal Police Training Center, Maharajgunj. This was the sixth win of Star Club in the league. Star Club has 19 points from nine matches and top position. Gyan Bhairab has six points from nine matches. Meanwhile, Chyasal Youth club defeated Sano Gaucharan Club 2-0 to move up to the second position. Arun Shrestha scored both goals for Chyasal. Chyasal has 16 points from eight games. Sano Gaucharan has four points in its account and remains at the second position from bottom.
