SPORTS BRIEFS: Ailing coach gets support

KATHMANDU, April 9: Ailing boxing coach Kishor Thapa received financial assistance for his treatment on Tuesday from former boxers residing in the United States of America. Thirty-six-year-old Thapa was recently diagnosed with paralysis, according to Olympian Umesh Maskey. Maskey told Republica that Thapa´s condition is deteriorating of late as his condition was triggered by stroke while playing boxing in his heydays.



Former pugilist Manoj Bahadur Shrestha handed over Rs 36,500 to Thapa´s daughter Arati amidst a function in Kathmandu. [break]



Shrestha had collected the amount from other Nepali boxers Sushil Pokharel, Bijay Dangol and Dhruva Shrestha residing in the US. Thapa had won bronze medals in the fifth and the sixth editions of the South Asian Games during the mid-nineties.



Khatiwada, Adhikari appointed NSJF members

KATHMANDU
: Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF) appointed Nabin Khatiwada and Niranjan Adhikari as its executive committee members on Tuesday. A meeting of the executive committee chaired by NSJF President Ajay Phuyal appointed Khatiwada and Adhikari to give full shape to its newly-elected body. There are 15 members in the executive committee that was elected on Saturday. Khatiwada and Adhikari were also executive committee members in the dissolved committee.



BNS Gold Cup starts Wednesday

DHANKUTA
: The organizer has increased the prize money for this year´s Martyr Bhim Narayan Shrestha Invitational International Gold Cup football tournament that begins in Dhankuta on Tuesday. Defending champion Birtamod Youth Club will face Clearing Football Club (CFC) Bhutan in the inaugural match of the tournament on Tuesday. Altogether eight clubs, including Nepal Army, Nepal APF Club, CFC, Boys Union and local teams from the eastern region, are vying for the title. The winner of the tournament will get Rs 100,000 while the runner-up will receive Rs 50,000.



In the last edition, the winner had received Rs 75,000 while the runner-up had got Rs 35,000. San Miguel Beer is the main sponsor of the tournament while Red Bull, CRS and Rara instant noodles are the co-sponsors. Meanwhile, Dhankuta District Development Committee has provided financial assistance of Rs 350,000 for the tournament while Dhankuta Municipality has provided Rs 100,000. The tournament will conclude on April 17.
