Traders said due to power crisis, sales of electronic products have come down but electric kettles have seen a dramatic increase in sales compared to last winter.[break]
“Sales of electric kettles and similar products have increased compared to last year because they are very user-friendly and help people escape the cold,” said Subarna Kaji, proprietor of Esquire Electronics.
Subarna´s store features products from Sharp, Panasonic, Sanyo and Black and Decker brands. The price of these items depends on the brand and capacity. “One-liter to around 6.5-liter of electric kettles and other similar products are available from Rs 1,500 to Rs 6,000,” Subarna told Republica.
Along with Chinese brands, leading international brands like Sharp, Panasonic, Electron, Philips, Electromax and Whirlpool have their footprints in the electric kettles category in the Nepali market.
“Though demand for electronic products has gone down but demand for electric kettles has increased in the market compared to last year due to increasing cold,” said Manoj Sharma, proprietor of Namaste Electronics at New Road.
“Every year, sales of the electric kettles increase but this year sales have gone up by around 40 percent compared to last year,” Sharma told Republica. Compared to last year, price of electronic kettles has gone up due to a rise in customs duty and strengthening of US dollar, he said.
According to Ram Bakhati, sales executive at Jumbo Electronics at New Road, sales of the electric kettles have increased because it doesn´t require much power to boil the water.
