The award was established in the name of late Dalit activist and journalist Subas Darnal, who died in a road accident in Washington DC four years ago. The trust made the announcement on the fourth death anniversary of Darnal, who was the founding chairman of Jagaran Media Center (JMC), amidst a function in Kathmandu.Sarita Pariyar, Darnal's widow and founder of the trust, said the award amount would be helpful for the students who are compelled to study under the tents and open skies in remote villages of Sindhupalchowk after the devastating earthquakes.
Subba Tamang, the principal of the school said, "My school had remained helpless after four rooms of the school were destroyed in the earthquake but this announcement has given hope that we will be able to reconstruct the school."
Before this, the award would be given to people struggling or fighting for social justice and empowerment of Dalits and for eliminating caste-based discrimination.
