BIRATNAGAR, Aug 16: Senior CPN (UML) leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has accused some of his party colleagues of giving protection to criminals.

Stating that such politicians have no political future, Nepal said, “Some politicians who have a criminal mindset have defamed our party,” Nepal said at a function in Biratnagar on Tuesday. “They will be brought to book.” [break]

Nepal also assured journalists that he will seriously take up the issue of political protection being provided to thugs. “As spiders are devoured by their own babies, these thugs will also devour their political patrons,” he said.

He said the state´s failure in taking action against Parshuram Basnet, who mobilized goons to attack Republica correspondent Khilanath Dhakal, led to another attack on Annapurna Post reporter Kishor Budhathoki.

Nepal also said that his party would not oppose any legal action against the thugs who attacked journalists. Youth Association Nepal (YAN) chairman Mahesh Basnet had recently threatened to close down Nagarik daily and jail its chief editor Narayan Wagle.
