One lakh trees planted around Bagmati's origin

KATHMANDU, Aug 21: Senior politicians, who otherwise engage themselves in inauguration of workshops, conferences and formal programs daily, participated in a different kind of program on Friday. [break]



They were active in planting trees and were accompanied by students and other personalities active in the society.



The leaders including president to ministers, political party leaders to school kids, police to army personnel and representatives of different social organizations took part in a tree plantation program at 12 different villages around the source of the holy Bagmati river including Danchhi, Gagalphedi, Kapan, Gokarna, Budhanilkantha, Nayapati and Chunikhel.



The program was organized by Ministry for Forest and Soil Conservation and National Nature Conservation Trust as part of their campaign to conserve the Bagmati river by planting over 100,000 plants on the banks of the river.



President Dr Ram Baran Yadav inaugurated the program by planting a Rudraksha tree at Phirphire Danda in Danchhi VDC.



On the occasion, Dr Yadav stressed protection of the planted trees to conserve the Bagmati civilization. Forest minister Dipak Bohora and environment minister Thakur Sharma were also present on the occasion.



At the program at Dhakal Gaun in Gagalphedi VDC, Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi inaugurated the campaign by planting trees. At Thadopakha of the same VDC, Acting prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar inaugurated the program.



CA Chairman Subas Nembang opened the program at Tapudanda in Kapan VDC while NC leader Ram Chandra Poudel, Health Minister Umakanta Chaudhary and State Minister for Home Affairs Rijwan Ansari took part in the tree plantation campaign in Bhanjyang of same VDC.



UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel and State Minister for Health Khadga Bahadue Bishwokarma took part in the program at Chandanda of Kapan VDC. Maoist Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma and State Minister for Industries Dan Bahadur Kurmi Chaudhari attended the program at Chisseni Pakha in Budhanilkantha.



RPP Chairman Pashupati SJB Rana and Minister of State for Land Reforms and Management Man Bahadur Shahi planted trees at Naidol of Gokarneshwor VDC while senior NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, Irrigation Minister Balkrishna Khand and NC leader Arzoo Deuba planted trees at Bhagwatisthan of the same VDC.



TMDP Chairman Mahantha Thakur and RPP General Secretary Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan planted trees at Nayapati VDC-6; CPN-ML General Secretary CP Mainali, Minister for Land Reforms and Management Dambar Shrestha and Minister for Agriculture Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav planted trees at Ratomato Danda in Kapan VDC and Rastriya Janashakti Party Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa planted trees at Chunikhel 8 and Chunikhel-9.



At the tree plantation programs, guests and commoners alike expressed worries about the decreasing size of forest in Kathmandu and its impact on environment. The called for protection of the planted trees to ensure green environment and to keep the Bagmati river clean and healthy.



Friday´s tree plantation is a part of the campaign -- One person, one tree plantation -- announced by the government through the budget speech.
