KATHMANDU: Sep 4, The government on Thursday decided to ban all unregistered social media and Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms in Nepal. With this decision, over two dozen social platforms will go offline in Nepal soon.
However, a few social media platforms that are either already registered or are in the process of registering in Nepal will still be available in Nepal. According to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT), the platforms that will continue operating as usual will include TikTok, Viber, Telegram, Nimbuzz, Poppo Live, Global diary and WeTalk.
The government decided to ban other social media platforms after they failed to register within a 7-day window. The order follows a Supreme Court directive and the Ministry says platforms will be reactivated once they comply with Nepal’s rules.
MoICT said that only five social media platforms are already registered while Telegram and Global Diary are in the process of getting registration in Nepal. The government has announced to allow the platforms that are in the process of registration to operate for the time being.

Notice of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Regarding the Regulation of Social Media Use
September 4, 2025
The Honourable Supreme Court, through a full bench hearing on the contempt of court case (Case No. 080-8-0012), has issued a directive order to the Government of Nepal. The order requires that all online and social media platforms, whether domestic or foreign, must be registered with the designated authority prior to operation, to facilitate the evaluation and monitoring of undesirable content.
In compliance with this order, and pursuant to the decision of the Government of Nepal (Council of Ministers) dated 2025/08/25, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology issued a public notice on 2025/08/28, granting social media platforms a period of seven days to register under the Directive on Regulating the Use of Social Media, 2080.
As some social media platforms failed to register within the prescribed timeframe, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority has been instructed to deactivate those platforms within Nepal. However, once such platforms complete the registration process, they will be reactivated immediately.
This notice is hereby issued for the information of all concerned stakeholders.
