KATHMANDU, Nov 23: Nepali Congress (NC) has formally registered with the Election Commission (EC) to participate in both the National Assembly and House of Representatives elections.

The party had on Saturday made a formal decision to contest the upcoming polls.

NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel confirmed that the party submitted its application for registration at 11 AM on Sunday.

According to the election schedule, the National Assembly election will be held on January 25 and the House of Representatives election on March 5, 2026.

The EC had set today as the deadline for parties wishing to take part in the National Assembly election to register, while parties have until November 26 to register for the HoR election.

Regarding candidate selection, the party has clarified that election tickets will bear the signature of party President Sher Bahadur Deuba. If the NC holds its 15th General Convention or a Special General Convention before the HoR election and leadership changes, future signatures on tickets may be updated accordingly.

The move follows the NC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Saturday, in which the party decided to move ahead through elections and participate in both polls.

During the meeting, General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa had said that since the election date had already been announced, going to the polls was the most appropriate way to address the current political crisis.

The party has maintained that the dissolution of the House of Representatives was unconstitutional, though it has argued that the matter must be settled by the Supreme Court, which has already asked the government and the President to clarify the grounds for the dissolution.

The NC has also stressed that the government must create a conducive environment for the elections, including recovering stolen weapons and arresting those still at large following the violent Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9.
