PM Koirala, who is the chancellor of all universities in the country, has formed the high-level committee to respond to Dr Govinda KC's demands.
Dr Govinda KC, a senior professor at the Institute of Medicine (IoM), has staged fast-unto-death several times in the past, demanding fulfillment of various demands, including charting out a new policy for medical education.To persuade Dr KC to end his hunger strike, the government had decided to halt granting affiliations to new medical colleges until the Mathema-led committee submitted its final report.
The committee has suggested the government to make separate governing council or an apex body to regulate medical education in the country.
Likewise, the committee has also suggested putting a cap on fee for MBBS programs at Rs 3.5 million. Medical colleges in the country have been charging MBBS students up to Rs 4.5 million.
The report has called for merit-based admissions in both government as well as the private medical colleges.
Former VC of Kathmandu University, Suresh Raj Sharma, Dr Madan Upadhya, former dean of the IoM, Dr Ramesh Kanta Adhikari, Dr Bhagwan Koirala, Dr Arjun Karki, former VC of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) were the other members of the committee.
