KATHMANDU, April 1: The United People's Movement Committee demanded that the Kathmandu Metropolitan City immediately revoke the fine imposed on former King Gyanendra Shah.
In a statement, the committee's acting coordinator, Dr Jagman Gurung, warned of legal action if the fine is not revoked.
In the press release issued on Monday, Dr Gurung clarified that the National, Nationalism, Religion, Culture, and Citizen Rescue Grand Campaign, with government approval, organized the protest in Tinkune on March 28, not the former king.
The statement said that the municipality imposed a fine on the former king for environmental pollution with the malicious intent to spread confusion and distrust. The committee deemed this decision contrary to the municipality's previous policies and malicious in nature.
The statement also emphasized that the organizing institution would take responsibility for the event and claimed that the police and district administration had approved the protest.
Dr Gurung alleged that while the municipality had previously corresponded with the organizers for the welcome program at Tribhuvan International Airport, it had now adopted a different policy. The committee stated that it would pursue legal and other actions if the fine is not revoked.
