Speaking at an interaction program in the capital on Sunday, civil society leaders warned the political leaders of a phase-wise protest campaign to put pressure for promulgation of new constitution and taking the peace process to its logical end.[break]
“There is a need of consensus government to promulgate the new constitution and take the peace process to a logical end. Three different majority governments were formed since the Constituent Assembly came into being and they couldn´t give us a the constitution for which the Constituent Assembly was created,” said Sudip Pathak, a human rights activist, in the interaction program.
He said the present political crisis in the nation is due to failure to implement the 5-point deal.
Similarly, Dr. Kedar Narasingh K.C, president of Nepal Medical Association, said the civil society will come up with various protest programs including laying a siege around the Constituent Assembly (CA) building to put pressure on parties to complete the constitution at the earliest. “The CA members have to make sure that they complete the constitution writing job from the same CA and should make the constitution writing process transparent.” He added that there is no meaning to extend the deadline of the CA if the political deadlock continues.
Speaking at the same program, human rights activists like Mohan Gyawali, Sher Bahadur K.C and Renu Rajbhandari emphasized that only a consensus government can rescue the nation from a likely disaster if the constitution is not completed within the deadline.
