BARDIYA, Aug 20: Following in the footsteps of their peers in Dang district, students in Bardiya have taken to the streets calling for an end to bandas. Students swarmed major streets of Guleriya, the district headquarters, on Thursday demanding that their schools be allowed to remain open even during bandas.

Despite the blistering heat, students from various schools sat on the street to study for hours.

The students said they hit the streets against frequent shutdowns that were affecting their studies.

"There has been agreements not to let bands affect but this has not been followed seriously. I guess political parties will never understand how such bands affects our studies and our future in the long run," said a student from Radha Krishna Bangalamukhi Higher Secondary School.

After marching through several streets, the students assembled at Radha Krishna Chowk of Guleriya.

Central Member of PABSON (Private and Boarding School's Organization Nepal), Nirmala Upadhaya, who also took part in the protest, said the political parties are gambling with the future of the students.

"Our protest should open the minds of party cadres that they are playing with the lives of students. This is one of the reasons why students fail to score good marks in the School Leaving Certificate exams," complained Upadhaya. "But the parents always blame the teachers for their children's poor performance," she added.

Meanwhile, Bardia Chapter of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Bardia Transportation Entrepreneur Association (TEA) has also informed of taking to the streets to press for their demands.

"Bandas are unacceptable. How can we pay monthly installments if such bandas continue? We are completely against the indefinite strike and demand that it be withdrawn as soon as possible," said Shambhu Rijal, member of TEA.

The banda has hit the people in the Tarai districts hard. The banda was called demanding the inclusion of Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts in a separate autonomous Tharuhat province.
