The five-member committee which was formed by a parliament meeting is unsure what to do next as the top leaders of the major parties decided to take matters into their own hands.[break[
Top leaders of the three major political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML -- discussed the amendment issue at a three-party meeting held at Singha Durbar on Thursday morning.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, NC President Sushil Koirala, NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel, UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal and KP Sharma Oli, among others, were in the meeting.
"We briefly discussed the amendment issue. We will deliberate on it in detail tomorrow [Friday]," Oli told reporters after the meeting. The leaders are scheduled to meet Friday morning again to discuss about government formation and the amendment issue.
The meeting of the drafting committee, later in the afternoon, didn´t even last for half-an-hour due to the same reason. "We are confused whether to hold any meeting on Friday because the matter has become main agenda at the top leaders´ meeting," a member told Republica, preferring anonymity. "What is the point of us meeting over a matter that is being taken up by the top leaders as chief agenda," said the member. Under the circumstance, the drafting committee is unlikely to submit the amendment proposal at the next parliament meeting scheduled for Friday, as expected earlier.
In the meantime, sources at the parliament secretariat said that the prime ministerial election is likely to complicate further if President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav presses upon the political parties to restart the election process as per the Article 38 (2) of the Interim Constitution. If the president´s office corresponds parliament secretariat to restart the election process as per the 38 (2) on Friday, the regulation can´t be amended until the process is underway. In such a scenario, top leaders may recommend the president to further extend the deadline by a couple of days for forming consensus government.
