KATHMANDU, March 9: Nearly two-and-a-half years after the Doti earthquake, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has reached the damaged area on behalf of the Government of Nepal and distributed the first tranche of relief to four victim families of the earthquake.

Home Minister Lekhak inaugurated the earthquake reconstruction project implementation unit after reaching the damaged area.

The unit office has been set up in Achham targeting the earthquake victims of Doti, Achham and Bajura districts. The office was inaugurated by handing over cheques of Rs 50,000 each to four beneficiaries of Bannigadhi Jayagadh Rural Municipality-3 and 4 of Achham.

Inaugurating the office of the implementation unit established at the Office of Achham District Coordination Committee on Saturday, he said that the current government has accorded high priority to post-earthquake reconstruction and rehabilitation works.

Stating that the earthquakes in Doti, Bajhang and Jajarkot districts caused loss of lives and property in recent years, he said it was unfortunate that the people could not get relief and rehabilitation for a long time.

Home Minister Lekhak said that the reconstruction, rehabilitation and repair work of the private houses that were completely damaged are currently progressing and claimed that the earthquake victims who have not received relief for a long time will soon receive the relief that they deserve. He also directed the Chief District Officer to provide funds without delay.

“The government has already committed to manage the budget,” he said, “If the beneficiaries are selected and the list of beneficiaries is sent from the local level on time, the amount will be available on time.”

An earthquake of 6.6 magnitude had hit Purbichowki Rural Municipality in Doti on November 9, 2022.
