The Youth Advisory Council is an association of youth from diverse backgrounds who have come together from all over the country to form a common association.[break]
Explaining the process of selecting members and the idea behind forming the council, Heather Steil, the Public Information Officer at the American Embassy said, “We used our contacts to shortlist youngsters and the candidates represent diverse ethnic, cultural and social background from all over the country.”
The candidates are in Kathmandu for a two day program during which they will take part in discussions with experts from various fields.
The opening day had Ashmi Rana, a business entrepreneur, Rabindra Puri, a conservationist and U.S. Ambassador Scott H. DeLisi mentoring the students.
The mentors highlighted the role youngsters can play in the development of any nation. Addressing the participants, Puri said “Youth is the only hope of the country.” He stressed on the need to work towards the tourism sector which, he claimed, holds highest economic potential.
Rana was of the opinion that the council was exactly what the youth required at the moment. “I hope the council brings together the youth of the country through platforms like these in future,” she said.
DeLisi too encouraged the youth to work in collaboration for the betterment of the nation. “No matter what political turn the country takes in a few days, the youth need to stay united and understand that they still hold the power to bring positive changes,” he said.
Apart from the speeches, the participants had group discussions amongst themselves on various social, political and economic issues. Entrepreneurship, Job Opportunities and Economy, Peace Process, Constitution and Rule of Law, Environment, Infrastructure and Natural Resources were the various topics discussed.
Although the participants will be in the capital only for two days they are expected to carry out Regional Conferences. The American Embassy is planning a second edition of the program in November.
