The office aims to make locals self-reliant and attract youths in the yak-rearing business through this program, said Pushpa Bahadur Budhathoki, chief at the DLO.
The office has launched grass planting program as a subsidiary component of the breeding program, said the office sources. As per this program, the office will provide fifty per cent subsidy while buying yaks for commercial purpose.
The yaks have to be kept alone in all seasons expect the time for breeding, experts said. They are kept with cows during breeding time, he added.
The program was launched in the district for the first time so the office has provided tents and other necessary materials to shift the yaks from one place to another. The yaks are used in transporting goods from Tibet areas to hilly areas in the district.
Yaks are kept for milk, leather and furs by the hilly people as a main source of income.
The yak rearing business has lessened due to lack of grazing field, grass, problem of shifting its sheds, indifference of youths, problem in breeding and lack of proper treatment, it is learnt. According to the statistics of the livestock office, there were 8,000 yaks in the district some five years ago while it has reduced to 4,000 now.
