KATHMANDU, Nov 22: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court on Monday against the Election Commission´s decision to collect new voter registration even from those without documentary evidence of citizenship.

Petitioners Sadhhya Bahadur Bhandari, Rishiraj Ghimire and Tara Sapkota jointly filed the petition demanding withdrawal of commission´s decision.

The petitioners claimed that EC´s decision could establish wrong precedent for the future.

"Those who have right to vote are eligible to be a candidate for any public position. If one has been registered in the voters´ list without the citizenship, he could apply to any public position without showing Nepali citizenship. Thus, EC´s fresh decision should be scrapped at the earliest through SC order," reads the writ petition.
