She is gripped by the fear that villagers might bully and even ostracize her if she returns to her village. The wounds on her body are still afresh.[break]
For the last five days, Sanu Kanchi has been taking refuge at the women cell of the District Police Office along with her three minor daughters. Her husband is a migrant worker and is employed in Qatar for the last two years.
“It is not possible for me to start a normal life as a majority of villagers think that I practice witchcraft,” she said. She also rued that no one had taken any initiative to rehabilitate her in her own village.
“Though the villagers who had attacked Sanu Kanchi are in detention, they do not appear to regret their heinous act. In this situation, we really doubt if she and her family members would be safe in the village,” said DSP Bel Bahadur Pandey.
On April 8 and 9, members from a local Mangladevi mothers´ group and villagers tortured and thrashed Sanu Kanchi for allegedly casting an evil spell on one Sukman Tamang, a local. She was tied to a wooden beam and tortured for around 36 hours by the villagers.
The police had rescued her on April 9. After being rescued, Sanu Kanchi lodged a complaint against 12 persons for mistreating her, said DSP Pandey. Of the accused, eight have been arrested while four others are at large.
