DANG, April 17: Normal life in five western Terai districts continued to be affected on Wednesday on the second day of the two-day strike called by organizations working for the welfare of Kamalaris.

Transportation has come to a standstill and marketplaces, academic institutions and businesses have all remained closed due to the strike in Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts since early this morning. [break]

Baton-wielding men and women have descended on the road to enforce the banda called by the organizations advocating for the rights of Kamlaris, who worked as bonded laborers before the system was abolished in 2002.

The organizations have claimed that Srijana Chaudhari, 12, of Lalmatiya, Dang was murdered on March 27 and have demanded that those involved in her murder be brought to book.

Srijana, who had worked as a domestic help in the house of engineer Yubaraj Sharma in Chakupati Lalitpur for two years, was found burnt to death in Sharma´s house.

The rights organizations have also registered a complaint with the police demanding action against Sharma, Srijana´s father Gangu Tharu, Parbati Chaudhari as well as Parbati Giri and Lal Mani Sharma who had abetted in sending the girl to work at Sharma´s house.
