Due to the unexpected rainfall across the country from Sunday to Tuesday as a result of Phailin Cyclone that occurred in the Bay of Bengal affecting Indian costal states--especially Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, Nepalis had to restrict themselves indoors during the Dashain festival.[break]
“The rain ruined the festival. I could not go to visit my relatives to receive tika and blessings,” said Chhitiz Adhikari, 23, a resident in Kathmandu.
The incessant rainfall that went on for three days affected normal life in the eastern, central, western and mid-western part of the country. Though weather conditions improved on Wednesday, many places remained cloudy throughout the day.
Senior Meteorologist at MFD, Shiva Nepal, said, “The country witnessed sudden rainfall due to the peripheral effect of the cyclone. From today [Wednesday], there will no rainfall and most importantly monsoon will disappear.”
He said incessant rainfall over the past three days has made the weather cold but that it is not the onset of winter. “The winter will arrive in November,” added he.
In the last three days, Pokhara recorded 98.7 mm, Bhairahawa 111.7 mm, Simara 85.7 mm, Kathmandu 70.1 mm, Okhaldhunga 100.4 mm, Taplejung 100.7 mm, Dhankuta 109.5 mm and Biratnagar 78 mm of rainfall. However, there was no rainfall in Dhankuta and Biratnagar on Wednesday.
