KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The third-largest party in parliament, CPN-UML, has come down heavily on the government for expanding the cabinet to a jumbo size and termed it against the seven-point agreement recently reached among the major political parties.

The UML has said the prime minister’s move would disrupt the environment of mutual trust and understanding among the political parties that has just begun to build up following the seven-point deal. [break]

“The expansion of the government to a 46-member cabinet and recruitment of unnecessary staff at the prime minister’s secretariat proves that the slogans of austerity and good governance announced by the prime minister are hollow,” said a statement issued by UML Chief Whip Bhim Acharya after the parliamentary party meeting of the UML on Thursday.

The UML also condemned the government decision to recommend the president to pardon Maoist lawmaker Balkrishna Dhungel who has been convicted of murder by the Supreme Court and slapped life term with property attachment.

“As the decision makes a mockery of the rule of law, promotes impunity and abets criminalization of politics, this meeting strongly demands that the government immediately revoke the decision, arrest Balkrishna Dhungel and respect the human rights and laws,” said the UML.

Ironically, the Supreme Court verdict has not been implemented till date. Dhungel continues to roam free and attends parliament meetings regularly despite the life term on him.

The UML parliamentary party also fiercely criticized the prime minister for signing the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) with India and claimed that the deal is against the national interest of Nepal.
