KATHMANDU, March 30: The ongoing central committee (CC) meeting of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) on Monday formed an 11-member standing committee. The meeting also elected unanimously former party general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal as the “senior leader”.
The standing committee has party chairman Jhala Nath Khanal; senior leader Madhav Nepal; vice-chairs Bam Dev Gautam, Bidhya Bhandari and Ashok Rai; general secretary Ishwar Pokharel; secretaries Bishnu Poudel, Shankar Pokharel and Yubaraj Gyawali; and contender for the chairman’s post KP Sharma Oli.

The committee also has Amrit Kumar Bohora, head of the party’s disciplinary committee, as the ex-officio member of the committee. Bohora however won’t have voting right.
Earlier, the 116-member central committee unanimously elected leader Nepal as the “senior leader” of the third largest party in the Constituent Assembly.
The meeting however couldn’t agree on a party secretariat. UML leader Raghuji Pant said the UML leaders were divided over whether the powerful party secretariat should be elected through direct vote or through consensus. Pant said the party will now focus on the April 10 by-election.
