JHAPA, July 20: Normal life in several districts in the eastern region has been paralyzed as the kin of a driver, who was murdered by unidentified persons three months ago, continued transportation strike for the fifth consecutive day on Monday.

They launched protests demanding Rs one million compensation to the bereaved family. Vehicular movement in Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar and Taplejung remained completely stopped for the last five days. People have started facing scarcity of daily essentials due to the strike.

A group of unidentified persons had murdered taxi driver Dipak Pandey, a resident of Garamani in Jhapa, in a jungle in Morang on April 13. Earlier, the Pandey´s relatives and transport workers had withdrawn protests after representatives from local administration and political parties committed to meet their demands.

"This time we will not halt the protests until we receive Rs one million compensation," said Laxman Basnet, chairman of pro-Maoist union All Nepal Transportation Workers´ Association, Jhapa.
