KATHMANDU, Sept 25: As Ganesh Thapa remains uncontested for a sixth presidential term, 22 others are vying for eight posts of vice president in the election of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) to be held on October 24.

Thapa, who has been at the helm of ANFA since 1994, had carried out "fierce" preparations for the election by collecting signatures of proposers and seconders before the election date was announced. He had made a nationwide tour to woo district associations for his sixth four-year tenure and had held separate meetings with club representatives a month ago. [break]

As nobody challenged Thapa, football officials are vying for the posts of vice president and executive committee member.

As the deadline for filing candidacy ended on Wednesday, 22 people are vying for the post of vice president. All eight vice-presidents of the current executive committee, namely Lalit Krishna Shrestha, Kishor Rai, Bijay Narayan Manandhar, Narendra Shrestha, Mahesh Bista, Kumar Jung Thapa, Karma Chhiring Sherpa and Sunil Kapali are contesting for another term.

Likewise, members of the current committee, namely Sunil SJB Rana, Kiran Rai, Basant Aryal, Hari Prasad Shrestha, Deepak Khati, Mani Kunwar, Ganesh Bahadur Chand, Gobardan Singh Samjhana, Deepak Lamsal, Bir Bahadur Khadka, Suresh Prasad Ligal, and Ganesh Bahadur Bhattarai have also filed candidacy for vice president. Meanwhile, Friends Club President Ratna Shamsher Rana and MB Gurung are also contesting for the post.

ANFA has a provision of electing a president, eight vice presidents and 22 executive committee members through the general assembly while the president and executive committee appoint general secretary, treasurer and other office bearers.

All the 45 district associations, 14 A division clubs cast a vote each in the election while B division clubs have five and C division clubs have three votes. Likewise, Players Association, Coaches Association, Referee Association and the Women´s Committee within ANFA have rights to cast a vote each in the election.
