KATHMANDU, June 21: Clouds have arrived in the country as harbinger of monsoon. But full-fledged monsoon is still several days away, the Meteorological Forecasting Division said. The immediate relief though is that temperature is not likely to rise now.

“Temperature started dropping from Sunday with the arrival of cloud system from the Bay of Bengal,” said meteorologist K B Malla. [break]

On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Kathmandu was 34.2 degree Celsius. On Sunday, the maximum temperature in Kathmandu dropped to 33.5 degrees. The highest temperature in Kathmandu ever was in 1989 when mercury rose to 36.6 degrees.

“Though we are not in a position to predict the exact date, we can safely say that monsoon will enter the country in late June,” Malla said.

This is not the first time that monsoon, generally expected around June 10, has been delayed in the country. In 1966, it arrived on June 22, while in 1979, 1982 and 1983, it arrived on June 24, June 27 and June 24 respectively.
