A rural information technology centre, established in Sankhu, is one of the such centres which remains closed.
The centre established at the initiative of former minister Jogmehar Shrestha in the fiscal year 2061/62 BS had provided communications services like fax, internet, among others only for a year.
An agreement had been initially reached to run the tele-centres by the National Information Technology Centre (NITC) in the first six months and to hand it over to local users.
Sankhu-based tele-centre Chair Gopal Lal Shrestha said the tele-centre has become a burden for us as the different appliances including computer, fax-machine provided by the NITC became dysfunctional within six months of operation.
The tele-centre office-bearers complained that they were unable to pay monthly rent as well as electricity tariff of the centre established at Ugratara Library building.
Tele-centre secretary Pawan Lal Shrestha said they informed the Singha Durbar-based NITC time and again for the repair and maintenance of the electronic appliances, but in vain.
Administrative Assistant at the NITC, Prakash Thapa, accepted that although they tried to run the rural information technology centre as a model near the capital, it became unsuccessful.
