MAHENDRANAGAR, Aug 8: Normal life was thrown out of gear in Mahendranagar on Monday due to a fresh wave of protests by locals demanding the appointment of vice chancellor (VC) and budget for the Far West University.

Students took to the streets as part of the third phase of agitation by a joint struggle committee formed by locals to pressure the Ministry of Education on their demand. They also staged a sit-in at the District Administration Office for two hours. [break]

The committee has announced a three-day general strike in Mahendranagar. “If the government fails to address our demands within the three days, we will launch a general strike throughout the farwestern region,” said Ganga Dutta Joshi, the committee coordinator.

Earlier, the committee had carried out different types of protests for almost three weeks in its first two phases of agitation. Dozens of locals and students were injured in those protests.

Two years ago, the government had approved three new universities including the Far West University. However, University Grants Commission (UGC) has not yet allocated budget for these newly-approved universities due to the ministry´s failure to appoint VCs.
