The arrested have been identified as Siraha district member of the party Ram Dyal Yadav, Surendra Yadav of Youth League and Tribhuvan Yadav of the student union of the party. According to police inspector Naresh Subedi, the arrested admitted their involvement in the vandalism. [break]
The press vehicle (Ko 1 Cha 5928) carrying Nagarik and Republica daily on the day of the strike announced by the Samyukta Loktantrik Morcha on Thursday was vandlaised by the strike enforcers near Mirchaiya Police office. Five motorcycle-borne men had attacked the vehicle smashing the windscreen and windows.
According to Basanta Giri, distributor of the newspapers, the five youths who were riding two motorcycles stopped the vehicle and asked for the newspapers before attacking. “Two youths went westward while the other three pelted stones at the vehicle. We fled the scene to save ourselves,” Giri informed. He also informed that the vandals wanted to burn the newspapers but could not due to lack of matches.
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Siraha district chapter condemned the incident terming it as the attack on press freedom. FNJ district chairman Dev Kumar Yadav demanded strict action against those involved in the attack. Similarly, rights organization, and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Siraha also flayed the attack.
The strike was organized jointly by seven Madhes-based parties including Madhesi People´s Rights Forum Nepal led by Upendra Yadav and Madhesh Samajbadi Party led by Sarat Singh Bhandari.
