Story Cycle - full circle

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: The communication cycle, in general, is only complete after the message sent is interpreted and in response comes a feedback from the receiver.

Story Cycle, a forum where everyone can tell his/her story works on this very principle. Initiated by Sauarv Dhakal and Ram Sharan Sharma, essentially journalists, Story Cycle inspires people to make films on various social and cultural aspects of their society.[break]

“The idea is to communicate the messages of people to people and bring about changes in the society,” informs Dhakal. Here, anyone and everyone is inspired to make films, and the only criteria being that these films need to address a certain social problem.

After a film is submitted, Story Cycle takes care of the editing and other technical aspects, making it ready for screening.

“We hold the screenings at those exact places where the problem persists, and the cycle completes only when the story returns to the origin with feedback and positive impact,” he says.

Apart from helping people with the technical aspects of filmmaking, Story Cycle also provides regular classes on the subject. Alongside the regular classes in the Valley, workshops and trainings are regular in other parts of the country too.

“Media is a powerful tool, and we hope to bring  about positive changes by making an optimum utilization of it,” he shares.

Although Story Cycle receives stories on a regular basis and the screenings too are successful, the most effective part of the entire campaign has been the Solar Show.

The first edition of the show was organized on October 10, 2010 in Bhaktapur. The show was performed by using solar backup of 1,100 watt for two hours. Observed by more than 10,000 locals, the show demonstrated the alternative for load-shedding problems alongside conveying the message on the environmental consequences and environmental conservation.

The second edition of the show has been announced, and the videos are now being accepted.

To participate, interested candidates are required to make a film of one to ten minutes in length, based on the theme of “Changing Livelihood” and submit it. This time around, the movie will not only be screened publicly on September 24 at Patan Durbar Square but will also made into multimedia messages (MMS), screened through various television channels and also distributed in DVDs.

“We aim at creating a huge impact, we aim at creating change,” is Dhakal’s idea.

Interested candidates are asked to upload their video to Vimeo or YouTube or a comparable online service, and submit it to www.storycycle.com. Your entry must be received by September 10, 2011.
