SPORTS BRIEFS: Three teams into quarters

KATHMANDU, Nov 25: Rupy´s International, Oasis and defending champion Daffodil booked their place in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Third Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter School Basketball Tournament in boys´ category on Friday.



Rupy´s beat The Sky Lark 42-35 as Barun scored 12 points. [break]



Oasis defeated the host NIMS 35-29 with 13 points from Purna Magar. In the last match of the boys´ category, defending champion Daffodil overcame Everest School 35-29. In the girls´ category Daffodil Public School fixed semifinal spot beating Reliance 22-15 with nine points from Pasang Sherpa.


Shrestha takes sole lead


KATHMANDU: Shyam Sundar Shrestha took the sole lead in the ongoing First Amatuer National Chess Tournament with the completion of the seventh round on Friday. Shrestha has earned six points from seven rounds. Shrestha defeated Sudip Bajracharya in the sixth round and shared half point with Prakash Nepal in the seventh round. Dharam Bahadur Lama and Prakash Nepal are jointly second with 5.5 points each. Bikash Kuluju, Sudip Bajracharya, Sajin Maharjan, Ram Kaji Maharjan and Milan Roka are in the third position with five points each.


Aims starts tourney with win


KATHMANDU: Aims School on Friday Saturday started the Sixth FECA Cup Inter School Football Championship with a win. Aims edged past defending champion Gothatar English Secondary School 1-0 in the inaugural match held at the Pepsi-cola town planning ground. Aman Lama scored the decider goal in the 13th minute of the regular 70 minutes match. Altogether 17 teams have participated in the knock-out championship organized by Fair Education Competitors Association (FECA). Saturday´s match will be held between Preetima and Tridevi while the other match is between Greenwich and Cosmic.



Valley Public starts with win


KATHMANDU: Valley Public School has started the ninth TIA Inter School Basketball Tournament with double wins on Friday. In the boys´ category, Valley Public thrashed Deneb 65-38 and Angel World 59-24. Ishwor Ghimire was the highest scorer in both the matches with 20 points against Deneb and 17 against Angel World. In the other matches of the boys´ category, OCA , TIA and Himalayan registered victory. OCA thrashed Loyalty 41-15, TIA overcame Valley Public B 34-28 and Himalayan edged past Gyan Niketan 31-30. In the girls´ category, TIA, Valley Public and Angel´s Heart registered win. TIA thrashed Bagmati 26-8 with 11 points from Pratima Malla. Valley Public beat TIA 16-8. Angel´s Heart registered a 29-19 win over Abhiyan Public.



Chyasal beat Gyan Bhairav


KATHMANDU: A lone goal from Prince Byanjankar gave Chyasal Youth Club a 1-0 win over Gyan Bhairav Club on Friday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League being held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj. Byanjankar scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute. With the result, Chyasal registered third victory from four matches played and climbed on third position with nine points. Second placed Kathmandu Club despite having equal nine points occupies second position on the basis of goals superiority. Madhyapur Youth Association leads the table with 10 points. Gyan Bhairav is in 10th place with four points.



Meanwhile, there won´t be any matches on Saturday. On Sunday, Mahabir Club will play against Samajik Yuva Club and Boys Union Club will take on Star Club.



Khadbari off to flying start

KATHMANDU: The host Khadbari Youth Club started with an impressive victory in the Khadbari Gold Cup Football Tournament that kicked off on Friday at Khadbari, Sankhuwasabha.



Khadbari thumped District Police Office 6-1. Former national player Surendra Tamang, Roshan Magar and Krishna Gopal Shrestha netted two goals apiece for the host team. Salikram Chaudhary hit the consolation for the cops´ team.



Altogether 14 teams of the eastern region are participating in the event.



The winner and the runner up of tournament will bag a purse of Rs 111,000 and 55,000 respectively. Earlier, an exhibition match between local journalists and guests was held before the inaugural match.
