SPORTS BRIEFS: Panchayan in quarterfinal

KATHMANDU, Nov 30: Panchayan on Tuesday made it to the quarterfinals under junior boys´ section in the Sixth Unique Inter-school Valley-wide Basketball Tournament being held at the hosts´ court at Siphal.



Panchayan beat Young Hearts 26-23 to emerge winners of group B. [break]Yogesh Thapamagar netted 11 points for the winning side.



Mount Glory defeated Celebration 18-11 riding on 11 points of Barun Thapa. Teresa hammered NOBS 31-11. Sudip Thapamagar topscored with 23 points for Teresa. Daffodil eased past AIA 35-24. Karsang Sherpa scored 11 points for Daffodil.



In senior boys´ 3-on-3 basketball, Unique A of the hosts hammered Innovative 33-5 to emerge winners of group A. Unique have already secured semifinal berth.



Nepali coaches in ACC course



Nepali cricket coaches Jagat Bahadur Tamata and Mahesh Prasad Rijal are leaving on Wednesday to participate in the ACC Level 2 Coach Educator Course. According to the Cricket Association of Nepal, the course will be held from December 2 to 7 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Altogether 22 coaches from 13 Asian nations are participating in the coaching course.


Nakhipot, Prime win



Nakhipot Youth Club and Prime Sports Club registered victories on the inaugural day of the First Motidevi Cup Women´s Open National Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.



Nakhipot thrashed Teresa 48-19 in the match held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium riding on 16 points of Sushma Thapa. Prime defeated NIMS 46-24 to register their first win in the league round of the tournament. Nayana Shakya contributed 11 points for the winning team. Bina Nakarmi of NIMS also scored 11 points.

In another match, Morgan College edged out Xavier International 40-30. Sujata Rai topscored with 10 points for Morgan.



Altogether eight teams are competing in the tournament and have been divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group will advance into the semifinals.

The winners will bag a purse of Rs 50,000 and the runners-up will receive Rs 30,000. Likewise, the most valuable player will get Rs 20,000.



The tournament will run until December 8.


FECA Cup football from Friday



The fifth edition of the FECA Cup Inter-school Football Tournament is all set to kick off in the capital on Friday. Sixteen school teams will be participating in the event, said Prahlad Khanal, advisor and program coordinator of the organizers Fair Education Competitors Association, during a press meet on Tuesday. The tournament will be held in knockout format at the Old Sinamangal´s town planning ground. The winners and the runners-up will bag a purse of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively.
