SPORTS BRIEFS: Mixed results in chess

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Nepali players´ performance remained mixed in the sixth round of the ongoing Lake City International Chess Tournament being held in Rajasthan, India, on Sunday. [break]

Until the completion of round six, FIDE Master Manish Hamal and Niraj Niraula have accumulated 4.5 points each. Manish lost to IM Anup Deshmukh of India rated 2261th in the fifth round and in the other he defeated Rajesh Gupta rated 1811th. Niraj defeated 1785th rated Rahul Gupta and shared points with 2319th rated Sasikanta Katuwal respectively.

Bikram Priya and Hari Chandra Chaulagain also won both round matches to add four points apiece in their kitties. Likewise, Purushottam Chaulagain won the fifth round and lost in the sixth. Raju Subedi also faced similar fate. Both have collected 3.5 points each.

Jeevan Mainali and Man Kumar Gurung have earned three and 2.5 points respectively.


Pokhara´s domination continues in women´s volleyball

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Pokhara´s teams continue to dominate the ongoing Fourth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament being held at the New Bus Park. Fishtail Academy, Pokhara won both the matches on Sunday while title holders Gyanu Baba won one match.

Gyanu Baba defeated Nepal Police Club (NPC) in straight sets 25-16, 25-20, 25-15. Fishtail registered a comfortable win over Angel Heart 25-12, 25-18, 25-9 in the first and in another they edged past PLA Sports Club 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18. Both of them are on the top of the points table with 15 points each.

Likewise, NPC defeated Angel Heart 25-22, 25-10, 25-19 in straight sets in another match. Similarly, New Diamond saw off Deep Jyoti 25-21, 25-12 and 25-14. Police have collected 11 and Angel Heart have nine points.
