Sport Briefs: Karate selection under scanner

KATHMANDU, Dec 10: The National Sports Council (NSC) formed a three-member commission on Thursday, under the coordination of Nepal Karate Federation (NKF) Vice President Min Krishna Maharjan, to probe the alleged irregularity in the selection of team coach and manager for the Nepali karate team to 11th South Asian Games (SAG). The probe was formed after a complaint was filed at the NSC, accusing the NKF of selecting coaches Deepak Shrestha and Hira Singh Dangol and team manager Singh Bahadur Rana, who is also secretary of NKF, through unfair means.



Team coach of Nepal Police Deepak Shrestha, Central Region´s coach Chori Dangol and Kata coach Bir Krishna Shahi had lodged complaint, claiming that the selection was made by only five members of the NKF out of 21 members.



The probe committee includes NSC member Lal Kumar Lama and SAG preparation committee secretary Partha Sarathi Sen Gupta as members. It will submit its report to the NSC within three days.



Gyanodaya, Wilson win



The girls´ team of Gyanodaya and the boys´ team of Wilson Academy won the titles of the basketball competition during the 16th Gyan Carnival Inter School Sports Festival.



Gyanodaya edged out Prithvi 29-17 in the girls´ section while Wilson struggled past GEMS 50-47 in the boys´ final. Anita Rai of Gyanodaya and GEM´s Roshan Basnet were declared the most-valuable-player.



Likewise, Deep Jyoti clinched the title of the mini boys´ volleyball defeating hosts Gyanodaya 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22. Meanwhile Siddhartha Vanasthali won the title of the boys´ football as they ousted GEMS 2-1 in the final.



NIBL Heritage Marathon Saturday



Nepal Investment Bank Limited (NIBL) is organizing ´NIBL Heritage Marathon 2009´ on Saturday.



The event is being organized to pay tribute to rich cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley, while emphasizing the need for its conservation. The event is being organized for the second time after 2007. The marathon, which will take part in the streets of Kathmandu will, is being organized with the theme of "Run for Fun".



Though the runners will not be compelled to furnish participation fee, the bank said it was expected donations and support from all concerned to make the event a success.



"Foreign organizations are welcome to help in the development program that we are initiating. But I would sincerely like to see the support of Nepali people for the preservation of our resources," said Prithvi Bahadur Pande, the chairman and CEO, of NIBL.



The bank aims to collect Rs 5 million for the preservation of natural heritage. NIBL actively involved itself in heritage conservation from 2002, when it donated Rs 1.5 million for the restoration of Kal Bhairav idol in the Hanumandhoka premises.



The bank aims to utilize the money collected from the marathon for the restoration of the Bhaidegal Temple of Patan Durbar Square.



NIMS, Kantipur, Daffodil enter semis



The hosts NIMS, Kantipur and Daffodil secured berth for semifinals under girl´s category in the ongoing First Niten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Thursday.



NIMS hammered Reliance 24-3 riding on 12 points of Sangita Shrestha. Similarly, with 12 points from Rohini Limbu Kantipur eased past Galaxy 22-11 and Galaxy had a comfortable victory of 23-3 over Excelsior.



Pema Tsongmu Sherpa contributed 10 points for Daffodil. Under boys´ category, Unique and Daffodil advanced into quarterfinals. Unique defeated Siddhartha Vanasthali 45-30 and Daffodil thrashed Excelsior 27-5. Manish Tamang netted 14 points for Unique and Keran Sharpa scored 10 points for Daffodil.
