Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader Pashupati SJB Rana, Nepali Congress (NC) leader and former president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists Taran Nath Dahal and CPN (UML) Central Committee (CC) member Sher Bahadur Tamang are contesting the elections from constituency 3 of Sindhupalchowk district. Political observers say that there will be a tough competition between Rana, Dahal and Tamang. UCPN (Maoist) leader Bil Bahadur Raymajhi is also a candidate from the same constituency. A total of 11 candidates from various parties will be contesting from the constituency.
As the CA elections approaches, candidates of various parties have started door-to-door campaign. “I visited voters of six VDCs during the Dashain festival,” said NC candidate Dahal, adding that the voters now want a new face to get elected. “Voters are fed up with old faces and have assured me of victory,” added Dahal. He then went to claim that NC is the only party that is serious about the issue of federalism.
UML candidate Tamang claimed that the attraction toward his party is increasing in recent days. “People will vote for me as our party has a clear election agenda,” said Tamang, adding, “In addition, we have a strong base in constituency 3 of the district.” He said he was reaching out to voters with the agenda of national unity, multi-identity based federalism and economic development.
RPP candidate Rana, who won the previous three elections from the constituency, has also claimed that his victory is certain. “I was defeated in the Constituent Assembly polls held in 2008 as I was not allowed to enter the constituency,” said Rana, adding, “But that will not be the case this time around.”
There are 52,000 voters in constituency 3 of the district. Political observers say the candidate who succeeds in taking people from Tamang, Sherpa and Gurung communities into confidence will secure over 60 per cent votes.
