KATHMANDU, July 8: With the confirmation of a strain of H5N1 virus at another poultry farm in Kathmandu, a rapid response team deployed by District Veterinary Office (DVO), Kathmandu has culled 4,298 chickens on Sunday night.

The team comprising vet officials and technicians had also destroyed 2,038 eggs and 1,400 kg chicken feed stored in the farm. The vet officials were busy destroying chickens droppings until Monday evening.[break]

According to Kathmandu DVO, the disease was detected in the samples collected from Chapagain Poultry Farm owned by Sushil Chapagain of Gothatar-6, Kathmandu.

The outbreak is second within a week. Earlier on Monday, the disease was detected in a poultry farm of Amit Kumar Rai of Gothatar-4, Kathmandu, where vet technicians culled 1,400 chickens.

Officials at DVO said that Chapagain´s farm is located nearby Rai´s farm.

"We started culling chickens at Chapagain´s farm on Sunday afternoon," said Bhola Raj Acharya, chief of Kathmandu DVO. He said that a meeting of district co-ordination committee led by chief district officer had also decided to cull tainted chickens and disinfect the farm.

He said that out of 5,000 chickens in Chapagain´s farm, around 700 had already died due to the disease. Chapagain himself had taken the samples of the dead chickens to the Central Animal Health Laboratory after they started dying.

The Directorate of Animal Health (DoAH) also claimed that it has intensified surveillance in the nearby poultry farms.

Meanwhile, DoAH has urged all poultry farmers to take proper care of their chickens as the disease has been spreading rapidly. The office has urged poultry farmers to immediately inform vet officials if they detect chickens displaying suspicious behavior. Chickens infected with bird flu virus avoid feed, stand still with their head down and drool.

The office said that the country has witnessed over 80 bird flu outbreaks since 2009. The office said that these outbreaks had been detected in Jhapa, Taplejung, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Dhading, Nuwakot, Chitwan, Rupandehi, Kaski, Nawalparasi, Kailali and Kathmandu.

The office has also appealed to the public to cook their chicken properly before eating and also to wash their hands properly with soap after touching any chicken
