KATHMANDU, March 10: In light of International Women’s Day, the Indian Cultural Center (ICC) in Kathmandu hosted an event on Wednesday entitled “Roles that Women Play” to facilitate an environment of dialogue.[break]

Hosted at Shangri-La Hotel, Kathmandu, the panel seated seven individuals from various sectors to speak about womanhood.

Mediating the event was Avas Karmacharya, program officer at ICC.

With intermittent humorous comments, Karmacharya introduced the speakers who presented on various topics related to women.

Speaking on women and law, Sapana Malla Pradhan, lawyer and member of the CA, commented on the change that Nepal is undergoing in terms of the new constitution and legal gender equality. “Equality isn’t in gender, it’s in attitude,” she argued.

Dr Arundhatie Biswas Kundal, who campaigns for womens’ rights, spoke on a similar note when she said, “No nation, no matter how developed, has fully achieved gender equality.” In her opinion, “Gender is not just a woman’s thing.”

Shrijana Singh Yonjan, founder of Creative Statements, highlighted the untold stories of women who she said are ‘unknown’ and ‘unacknowledged’ but need to be recognized.

Seema Golchha, founder of Samsung Plaza, talked about being a woman in the corporate world and the “glass ceiling” of limitations that women need to break.

Malvika Subba made enlightening points on being former Miss Nepal and how she’s been moving on from the title and identifying different aspects of being a woman in beauty, media, and now the corporate world.

Director of ICC, Dr Geeti Sen, briefed the audience on women in art, and writer Jagdish Rana, ran through a list of influential women writers.

The event mostly appealed to the female audience by addressing the multifaceted issues affecting women.
