KATHMANDU, Oct 3: Nepal Army (NA) on Sunday has taken strong exception the recent statements of New York based Human Rights Watch against the backdrop of General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung´s five-day official visit to the United Kingdom.

South Asia director at Human Rights Watch Meenakshi Ganguly had said in the statement, “The Nepal Army has a deplorable human rights record and has consistently failed to allow perpetrators of abuse to be prosecuted. [break]

If the UK wants to help Nepal´s army to be professional and rights-respecting, then British officials should press the army to rein in impunity, and show that commitment by handing Major Niranjan Basnet over to the civilian authorities.

”Basnet was accused of involvement in the murder of Maina Sunuwar in February 2004. Issuing a statement, the NA has said that it is always committed to abide by international humanitarian laws and has been punishing human rights abusers.
