“The result of the survey that was conducted in the few VDCs gives the whole picture of the conditions of the girls in the district,” said Bimala Shrestha, who is with the committee that carried out the survey. [break]
The survey was conducted in Chautara, Tekanpur, Pangretar and Jalbire VDCs of Sindupalchowk districts. The survey was done among 225 girls in the age group of 10-19.
The report reveals that 3.3 percent of the girls got pregnant before the age of 19, and 3 percent suffered from urine infection.
The most surprising revelation of the survey was that 68.8 percent of the girls said they were unaware about the use of contraception and 54 percent said they had no idea what HIV/AIDS meant.
“Since early marriages are prevalent among girls in villages, they are more susceptible to reproductive and other health problems,” said Shrestha.
