ITAHARI, Oct 20: In an attempt to contain the development of any possible nexus between jail birds and criminals outside the prisons, the administration of Eastern Regional Prison has begun tapping incoming calls to the inmates.

Twelve inmates had escaped digging a 30-meter tunnel from the Jhumka-based Eastern Regional Prison on November 8, 2012, using telephone to coordinate the jail-break.

The telephone lines were made one-way for the inmates after the incident. [break]

Jailer Ganersh Adhikari informed that the administration has already started tapping incoming telephone calls from Sunday.

He also informed that the jail administration has been consulting with the Nepal Telcom to install the system that allows them to hear the conversation between the inmates and the callers, loud and clear.

The jail administration took the step after it came to an attempt by outsiders to provoke the inmates during Dashain holidays through telephone calls.

Budh Sagar Meheta of Sunsari , one of the activist of the outlawed armed outfit Tarai Janatantrik Mukti Morcha had tried to lure some inmates through telephone to stage stir inside the prison.

Mehata was released two months ago serving a two-year term on the charge of illegal possession of arms and ammunition.

“This is the first incident when the inmates were being provoked by outsiders through telephone calls. We need to nip such tendency in the bud,” Adhikari said.

The telephone available for the conservation for the jail bird is one-way system, in which they can only receive the call.

As for the direct conversation between the inmates and visitors in the prison, the jail administration has been directly monitoring it.

Meanwhile, 39 army personnel have been deployed for the security of the regional prison. The army would guard the prison along with the 13 policemen as the other security personnel have been deployed elsewhere for the purpose of upcoming Constituent Assembly election.
