Regional meet on Afghanistan kicks off

KATHMANDU, May 14: A two-day regional conference on Afghanistan in SAARC: Towards Deeper Engagement kicked off in capital Tuesday to discuss how the war-torn country can play an important role in the SAARC region.



Organized by the Center for South Asian Studies in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the conference has drawn participants from Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. [break]



Vice President of National Assembly (Kabul), Fawzia Koofi, Director General of Center for Strategic Studies (Kabul), Dr Faramarz Tamanna, Former Indian Foreign Secretary Salman Haidar, former ambassadors Aslam Rizvi (Pakistan), Dr Shambu Ram Sinkhada (Nepal), Prof Dr Abdur Rob Khan, Director of Institute of Development (Bangladesh) were among those presenting papers on the issue on the first day of the conference on Tuesday.



The conference also discussed the possibility of deploying SAARC regional peace keeping force under the UN auspices after the NATO forces will be pulled out of Afghanistan.
