It took several days to clear the heaps of boulders and rubbles at around two dozen stretches of the highway in Dang, Salyan and Rukum districts, the concerned authorities stated. [break]
A joint team of the Nepal Army and Nepal Police had to use explosives to clear some of the road sections.
Due to the blockage, thousands of passengers were either stranded or forced to walk for several hours and change vehicles to reach their destination. Likewise, price of food commodities had also skyrocketed.
Similarly, vegetables worth Rs. 3 million had decayed in Kapurkot in Salyan due to the prolonged closure of the highway.
Meanwhile, the landslides have damaged a few school buildings and houses in Salyan.
Three buildings of Kalika Secondary School in Dhanwang VDC have been completely destroyed by a landslide. Likewise, landslide also demolished a compound wall of a government office.
Due to incessant rainfall for the last seven days, as many as 12 households in Kotmala VDC of Salyan are at high risk of landslides.
As many as 30 families of Aadmara village in Archale VDC of Palpa are living in a constant fear due to landslides in their vicinity.
“Landslides have been burying our fields for the past few days. We have become so scared that we have not been able to sleep properly for days in a row now,” said Purna Bahadur Khangal, a local of the village.
