It has been possible because of the joint commitment from the UDMF, civil society, and the local administration to keep the protests peaceful."We have learned lessons from the past and adopted an acceptable behavior during protests," said Ugrakanta Jha, leader of Malangawa Civil Society. "There is a mutual understanding between protesting groups and the administrative bodies, which has largely contributed in ensuring that protests remain peaceful," he added.
According to Jangilal Rai, district leader of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP), the agitating groups adopted flexible behavior throughout and carried all the protests peacefully.
"Although we faced various difficulties and challenges during the 49-day of district-wide agitations, proper coordination between administrative and security bodies helped prevent untoward incidents," said Chief District Officer (CDO) Megnath Kafle.
In one such incident, protesters had attempted to torch the residence of CPN-UML CA member Kamala Devi Mangalawa. Police had fired 42 rounds of bullets in the air to take the situation under control. Two protesters had sustained injuries in the incident, both of whom are undergoing treatment in Kathmandu and are already out of danger. The UDMF, however, claimed that their cadres were not involved in the incident.
