Addressing a function organized by the Association of Former Career Ambassadors of Nepal (AFCAN) in the capital to felicitate UN Under Secretary General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries Gyan Chandra Acharya on Wednesday, former diplomats said such an approach would help realize the goal of regional connectivity that has become so hard to achieve. Since underdevelopment has become intricately linked with LDCs, integration process, they said, could help LDCs emerge out from the state of underdevelopment.
Speaking at the function, former diplomats also suggested the concerned UN office to promote the issue of connectivity.
Similarly, Acharya said Istanbul Plan of Action (IPoA) that makes qualitative shift from Brussels Plan of Action (BPoA) takes due considerations to issues facing the LDCs and Small Island Developing States(SIDS). Besides the problems of food security, energy and climate change, the critical issues facing the LDCs are transit and transport problems, he said.
While noting that resource mobilization is one of the important challenges in realizing the goals set by IPOA, Acharya said he has begun consultations with members of the UN Development Group in his capacity as the High Representative for LDCs group of countries to make necessary funding arrangements for the development endeavors of the least developed countries.
He also said that negotiations are under way with international financial institutions including World Bank, Asian Development and African Development Bank to ensure that their funding is in line with the priorities set by the IPOA.
